JONAH HEX is a Western adventure series from DC COMICS, telling the tales of a surly & cynical anti-hero who takes pleasure in serving his own vigilante brand on vengeance on sinners. Essentially, he’s a bounty hunter who does whatever the hell he wants. JONAH HEX is currently being showcased in his own series with four trade paperbacks already out there.
Thus far, I’ve only read the first trade paperback of JONAH HEX (FACE FULL OF VIOLENCE) but I enjoyed it immensely. Jonah’s not your classic superhero, which means he doesn’t don a fancy costume. He also hasn’t got a closet full of baddies waiting to pop out with their nefarious schemes; and indeed, he doesn’t come across the same villian twice in the traditional sense in the first trade paperback. This is mostly due to the fact that he’s being depicted as a bounty hunter, and therefore he makes a living by delivering the bad guys to the people that are paying him. Of course, that sparks the debate as to whether Jonah can be considered a good guy or not. It’s that tricky gray area; where does Jonah cross the line? Well, it’s up to us, the readers, to draw our own conclusions. And therein lies the fun of it all.
At any rate, the variety of adventures already experienced and the limitless possibilities of what is yet to come makes JONAH HEX quite an exciting title to look forward to! I’m eagerly anticipating the second (which I will actually be receiving in the mail soon) and third trade paperbacks of JONAH HEX, as I hear the stories being told only keep getting more and more interesting. So, if you’re keen on investing in something different from your usual superhero story, give JONAH HEX a chance. It’s one of the freshest comic series out there currently.
And truth be told, I never thought I’d ever find myself enjoying a Western adventure series so much… but at the end of the day, I simply cannot pass up on a good anti-hero saga! Especially one with such pretty colours. Ha!
